Friday's Top 5... Burton/Depp Collaborations

#5: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Yes, I am one of the few people who actually likes Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I can't help it; I think that movie is hilarious and so is Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka. I'll show myself out...

#4: Sweeney Todd

I wasn't completely enamoured with Sweeney Todd when it came out, but it's grown on me somewhat since. It offers a nice blend of horror and dark comedy, the music is catchy, and it's got style to spare. It's far from perfect, but it is entertaining.

#3: Corpse Bride

Burton's second foray into stop-motion animation is a definite winner. A darkly charming story about a young man who accidentally marries a dead woman and then has to find a way out of the marriage so that he can marry the actual (and living) woman that he does love, Corpse Bride is a surprisingly sweet and visually arresting film.

#2: Edward Scissorhands

The first Burton/Depp collaboration definitely comes close to being the most entertaining and resonant of their films together. The story of a misfit trying to find his place in a sometimes hostile world, Scissorhands remains one of Burton's most original visions and one of his best realized projects.

#1: Ed Wood

Edward Scissorhands is excellent, but nothing can top the perfection that is Ed Wood - I would go so far as to say that not only is it the best of the Burton/Depp collaborations, but it's the best film either of them has ever made. Ed Wood is a movie that is both perfect on a technical level, and perfectly entertaining to watch.
