Friday's Top 5... Reasons This Summer Will Give You Deja Vu

#5: Ten Years Later... Another Men in Black

In 1997 the original Men in Black dominated the box office, becoming the film with the second highest domestic gross for that year (behind only Titanic) and in 2002 Men in Black II took the world slightly less by storm, securing a place at the bottom end of the top 10 earners for the year. A decade after the fact, was the world really clamoring for another Men in Black film? I guess we'll see soon enough.

#4: A New Alien Movie... Sort Of

Okay, officially Prometheus isn't an Alien film but... you've seen the trailers, right? It's totally an Alien movie. Totally.

#3: A Batman Movie... Featuring Catwoman

If you forget the horrendous Halle Berry starring Catwoman (and we all should), then the last time Catwoman graced the big screen was 1992's Batman Returns. This summer Catwoman faces off with Batman once again in The Dark Knight Rises.

#2: Total Recall

Remakes are very rarely necessary, but a remake of a film that came out in 1990 feels particularly offensive. The original was pretty good, as I recall, and certainly one of the best adaptations of a Philip K. Dick novel so... this seems a little unnecessary (even more so than Colin Farrell's last film, the Fright Night remake, because apparently Farrell only stars in remakes now).

#1: Spider-Man

It seems like just yesterday Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man series owned the box office. Perhaps that's because it practically was yesterday. The first entry in the series only came out ten years ago, the last entry only five and now we have The Amazing Spider-Man, which can presumably tread the same origin story ground that's still fresh in so many minds.

Well, as Sondheim said - Everything's different, nothing's changed, only (maybe, slightly) rearranged.
